Time for a 1-up!!

November 21st, 2007

I haven’t updated the blog in a while as I’ve been busy with papers and most of the time I spend outside of papers is spent with Super Mario Galaxy.  I know that I’ve probably played a bit to much Mario Galaxy.  I know this because, today, I looked up at a flag pole and thought to myself… If I get to the top, I bet I could get a 1-up mushroom.

That got me thinking about the logic behind multiple lives in videogames.  This is never a good thing.  My thoughts centered on the following:  If a videogame character with multiple lives dies of old age… what happens?  I mean, do they come back to life, still old?  Do they come back to life young again?  As I said, this thought process is never a good thing.

Also, I haven’t really had a chance to tell you guys what I thought about portal yet.  IT WAS AWESOME!!!  POSSIBLY SOME OF THE BEST 6 HOURS OR SO I’VE PLAYED OF VIDEOGAMES EVER!!!  Portal is some of the best evidence I can find that videogames can be art in the way that film, theatre and literature can be.  One of the signs of a good piece of artwork is that people will constantly keep analysing it.  I have definitely done this with Portal.  So far I’ve looked at it in terms of Asimovian Rules robopsychology, in terms of women (as all the characters seem to be female, and the computer mentions women), in terms of the implications of interaction and immersion in videogames, and as an allegory for Videogames themselves.  I’ll probably talk about these in more detail some other time, but it is defiantly a game worth buying.
