Pareidolia

January 20th, 2008

Pareidolia.  I’ve been looking for that word for a while.  You see, it means the human tendency to see patterns in things (like in clouds or wood).  This explains many things like why people think they see a face in the moon or why they think they hear hidden messages when they play songs backward.  It’s an attempt by the mind to order random or confusing things into patterns it understands.  I think it’s a very interesting property of humanity and I’ve been trying to remember the word for it.  I’ve finally found a google search that got the word.  Pareidolia.  I’ve actually had conversations where I wanted to use that word but wasn’t able to since I didn’t know it.  Now to try to remember the word.
