Ginastera’s 1st Piano Concerto 4th Movement/Toccatta

January 29th, 2008

So, a month or so ago, I got the album “Brain Salad Surgery” by Emerson Lake and Palmer.   It’s a great album, but one thing about it that interested me was Toccata.  Toccata was a cover of Ginastera’s 1st Piano Concerto 4th Movement using electronic instruments.  The song got really crazy and intense.  I found out though wikipedia that apparently Ginastera’s agent wasn’t going to give ELP the rights to the song, but Ginastera heard their version and thought it fit the mood of the piece well.

Alright, I though, I have to hear the classical piece that spawned this crazy electronic prog rock song.  I got the original today.  It turns out that, they are really similar, just with different instrumentation and some changes in some parts.  The interesting thing is, the small changes and different instrumentation made Ginastera’s version a classical piece, and ELP’s version a rock song.  I think Ginastera had it right when he says that the ELP version had the same spirit, the same mood as the original.  I think that’s what defines music more that the genres that we’ve put it into, the driving force behind the music is what really matters.
