Spore

September 12th, 2008

As you probably know if you’ve been reading the comic, I’ve been looking forward to Spore for a long time, and now that I’ve been playing it for a little while, I think I should write something about it.  First of all, it’s really fun.  And addicting.  Some parts of it aren’t that deep(Tribal and Civ stages mainly), but the game is fun to play all around.  The game gives you a lot of options on how you want to play.  During the creature stage you can hunt solo, create a group of your own species, or team up with other species.  The sheer amount of content in the game keeps it interesting, especially during the Space stage, when you can run into all of it as you explore the galaxy.  The game has a good learning curve created by the fact that each stage takes some elements from the previous stage and then adds some new ones, rather than forcing you to learn a totally new system.  For example the ability to get teammates in the creature stage returns in the space stage and the system of taking over cities economically or militarily  during the civilization stage continue to taking over planets in the space stage.

There’s still some room for improvement in the game which I hope will be addressed in the inevitable expansion packs.  For example the lack of sea creatures and the fact that the vehicle editor is sometimes limited and hard to use.

All in all I’ve been greatly enjoying the game and will be hooked to it for quite some time to come.
