Talking about Music: The Resistance
September 16th, 2009So, I got the recent Muse album, Muse being one of the few modern bands I actually listen to regularly. They definitely continue to get a nice Queen sound going in a lot of the harmonies, especially in bits of United States of Eurasia when they really sound like Queen (Both harmonies and guitar). Also, there seem to be some elements of Gong, especially in the up-beat parts of I Belong to You (plus the “Come On!” in Uprising sounds a lot like the “Don’t Know!” in Gong’s Fohat Digs Holes In Space).
The album ends with the three part Exogenesis. Reminiscent of the Prog Rock epic suits of the 70s, but with a distinctively modern sound. I remember reading a while back that Muse was planning to do an extended length Space Rock song on this album. Now, while this song is definitely spacey, it’s not really what I would call Space Rock in the strictest terms (I.E. it’s not loud, atonal, meandering and psychedelic). It is more in line with Space Operas* like Rush’s 2112 or Genesis’ Watcher of the Skies. It also takes a very modern approach with a very sleek sound. I enjoy it quite a bit, and it has some really powerful moments, in my opinion.
I’m not sure if I like it as much as Black Holes and Revelations, but it could grow on me more.
*(The fact that Space Rock is a distinct genre makes it difficult to classify spacey sounding rock/rock that occurs in space. For my purposes, Interstellar Overdrive by Pink Floyd is Space Rock, 2112 by Rush is Space Opera, and Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh by Magma is Operatic Rock IIIN SPAAAACE)
