Crazy Trumps Sensible

September 23rd, 2009

I’m not counting this one as a design musing as it applies to most forms of entertainment.

The problem I see with most entertainment I see is that it tries to make something safe and sensible.  The idea is that if you know what you’re making, and keep it simple, it’s less likely to fail.  However, I put it to you that I would rather see a bad movie or read a bad comic book that tried to do something crazy than watch even a semi-decent movie or comic that does something that I’ve seen before.  If you go for something crazy, at the very least, it’ll be entertaining, if not, in the strictest terms, good.  And if you succeed with something crazy and out there, it becomes more memorable for that.

I enjoy bad movies.  I have a collection of old, and generally crappy, B-Movies.  I can laugh at them, and I find them entertaining.  Particularity the ones that go all out and make something completely ridiculous.  They might not be the best movies, but at least they keep you entertained and show you something you wouldn’t have seen otherwise.  However, with many movies, they try to make just another action movie or romantic comedy.  When they fail to make a good movie like that, they end up with simply a boring movie.  And even if they succeed, it’s still just a strong version of all the other action movies.

So, I guess the takeaway is if you’re making entertainment, shoot for the fences, ’cause even if you fail, you’ll still make something entertaining and unique.
