August 23rd, 2007I’m sure some people are gonna get mad when I say this. But I suppose if I never make anyone mad, it means I’m doing something wrong. Anyway.
I’ve never really liked Final Fantasy that much. Particularly VII. I mean, I can see how it would be fun if you like turn-based RPGS, which I really don’t, but there’s two very big problems with the game that I just can’t ignore.
Their names are Cloud and Sephiroth. (See what I mean? I’m fairly certain that at this very moment I hear a lynch mob outside my door.)
First of all, Cloud. Now, as a character, he’s pretty hard to identify with. This MIGHT be because he’s a genetically altered super-soldier who wields a sword bigger than he is. But I think my problem with him mainly stems from his complete and utter lack of any sort of emotion or personality. His facial expression never changes, even when Aeris, the love of his life, is being brutally murdered. Sure, I guess that in FFVII, the graphics weren’t really advanced enough to show many facial expressions. However, when I saw Advent Children, the movie sequel to FFVII, he’s just as emotionless as in the game. As a character, he’s really just not interesting.
Then there’s Sephiroth. Now, I kind of like Sephiroth’s backstory. But, for a humanoid cloned from an alien monstrosity whose goal is to destroy earth so he can fly through the universe on its charred remains, Sephiroth is pretty boring. You can only see so many long-haired evil prettyboys before you just aren’t able to take them seriously any more. And yet for some reason, the general public seems to consider him the greatest villain ever. Really, though, he just has three things working in his favor. His awesome theme song, the aformentioned scene where he kills Aeris, and his ability to make a great entrance. Take away all that, though, and he’s just a long-haired guy with a sword. And anyway, what’s with the whole “One-winged angel” thing? Having one wing isn’t cool, it’s lame. What could he possibly use it for? He can’t use it to fly, so really it would just get in the way.
I really am confused by how, in a game with such great characters as Reno, Cid, and Barret (he’s friggin’ Mister T with a robotic arm!!!) the two central characters could be so boring.

I actually agree with you. Now, it could be that cloud not having a personality was on purpose. Many good videogame characters don’t have personalities so that the player can project their own personalities onto the character. Think Mario, Link and Gordon Freeman. However, this being a Final Fantasy game, I don’t think that is the case. Final Fantasy games (especially the 3d ones) are highly story driven, and therefore they usually give the main character a personality.In other words, I agree that the game should have been Cid, Barret and Red XIII’s wacky adventures, in which they would fly around in the Highwind fighting crime and dealing with Cid’s crippling emotional problems.Fun time all around!I must say though, even though they wern’t very interesting as characters, Cloud and Sephiroth did have pretty interesting backstories.
